garden, july 2017 - hits and misses. and a bunch of kimchi!!!

the days are getting hotter and true summer has arrived.

soon we'll be celebrating daily river days - we can't wait! jambaloney even started clearing us a path to the river!

he's up to eyeballs in garden work, weed-whacking, mowing and his contract every day - so for this year we will just use the path. but the poor guy still hasn't had the time, or proper weather, to start grading our driveway. and that is going to be no small feat! if he can get the driveway done by october (bahahaah!) - then he'll start working on our river road with the tractor. no worries - we're fine with just a walkable path until then.

allrighty garden hits and misses! every year - there are always hits and misses! we'll start with a hit: 2 beds full of garlic sending out scapes!

we eat a lot of garlic and i think this will keep us in garlic for the year!

how about some misses??? 16 rows of carrots planted, all of the seedlings came up but when they were just tiny - we had a hard frost. at least that's what we think - we woke up one morning and they were all gone! we have since replanted all 16 rows. note to self - plant the carrots out a little later next year.

another hit? the peas are growing like mad and because we planted them using the biomulch and they took to it - we thought we'd use the biomulch for everything!

and that would be another miss! no beets, no radish and ony 2 turnips!!! so we will re-start beets and radishes and brassicas in the next week or so - we have a bunch of other stuff that we need to do.

another hit? overwintered peppers full of flowers and we already have little peppers growing - woohoo!

these are peppers planted from seed this year and they are flowering too!

volunteer tomatoes that jambaloney finds in the compost and in our raised beds - he meticulously gathers them all and transplants them!

and here's a bunch more!

all kinds of herbs here!

all doing well except for the sweet basil and the queen thai basil which will be replanted tomorrow. but the dill is going to seed, green onions going to seed, parsley going to seed - we have more pots of them outside but will be planting more - we love fresh herbs!

all of the 32 tomatoes in greenhouse#2 are thriving!

lots of little flowers!

and baby tomatoes - woohoo!

sorry for this really blurry pic of our 4 tires with melons, zucchini, cucumber and our 8 corns.

we are just test-trying with the corn this year to see if it will grow - so far - so good! i'd love to be able to grow, freeze and can our own corn.

the winner every year is our potatoes

that's 200 potatoe plants growing us enough potatoes for the year! jambaloney has given away a bunch of our seed potatoes to colleagues at work. but we still have another 40 seed potatoes and we will plant them wherever we can find a spot.

check out this sage, lemon balm and bee balm!

and rosemary, mint and chives!

it's herb-drying week for sure!

pretty calendula flowers and i have no idea what the pink flower at the top right is!

transplanted chammomile is a little burned looking - too much sun!

a great breakfast? beautiful perch fillets that jambaloney caught, some bean sprouts and local cherries and strawberries!

making jambaloney's hot sauce from some left-over peppers that i froze last harvest.

he had his home-made hot sauce all year with the peppers we harvested last year. this year it looks like we'll get even more and start canning the sauce.

he loves it very hot and vinegary!

we had vermicelli with green onions, shrimp, carrot, avocado and bean sprouts with my infamous kymberz-sorta-vietnamese sauce which will help clean you out in a hurry - that sauce is to die for!

and then today while jambaloney was weed-whacking i made up 7 jars of kimchi! yummeh!

there a jar and a half of regular, spicy korean kimchi, 2 jars of daikon radish, carrot and beansprout kimchi, one jar of sweetish bean sprout kimchi and one jar of spicy as-oh-heck bean sprout kimchi. we love to have these on hand - not only for a side condiment to our meals but some days when we are out working and don't want to stop - we just come in and get a big forkful each - deelish! we also always like to have freshmade salsa and hummus in the fridge for the same reason.

oh and last but not least - our Scoby, Flower325b just produced 4 and a half more jars of kombucha! we drink that stuff like mad!

sending love to you all and will catch up on your blogs soon!

july 11 update

jambaloney got the yard weedwhacked - no matter though - the grass and stuff will be up to our knees again tomorrow!!!

put a basket down for 5 seconds and a cat will get in it.

we've been on a bit of a meat-kick this week - it's because jambaloney spent the week working on his contract and building the greenhouse. here's some chicken thighs with a grilled mushroom, some radish kimchi, and 3 different sauces for dipping. the honey-mustard sauce turned out really well!

jambaloney weedwhacked the side yard too - we can now finally see Ted's bench!

a roasted tomatoe stuffed with quinoa, spinach and broccoli. with broccoli heart salsa on the side.

yum. bulgogi. left to marinate in the fridge for 3 days. then you thicken and cook the marinade sauce.

with snowpeas and mushrooms and kimchi - deevine!

even on a foggy morning it's beautiful out there!

here's what's happening in greenhouse#2 so far -

we transplanted corn, cucumbers, zucchinis and melons and put cages on them. that trough-looking thing to the left is where we are going to put all of the pots of tomatoes. it's looking like it's going to be a bumper year on a pile of things!

this year our rosebush is covered in roses! i need to make some sharab ward soon. you can learn more about lebanese rose water here. sooo delicious!

and then there's Monky and the Rat out hanging around.

and 2 very slanty-looking greenhouses??? we don't care - they work - and will give us a ton of room to grow things that don't like wind. one thing for sure is that we always have wind. we got the atlantic ocean on all sides of us!

which means the air is always salty and fresh. you can't ask for more than that!

world - meet greenhouse#2

jambaloney has finished building the greenhouse - WAHOOEY! and the yard is showing that he has been spending his time building the greenhouse and working on his contract!!!!

it's a bit overgrown but soo green and lush - we don't care! no one can see us up on our hill...but they are pretty crazy about lawn maintenance out here! crazy, eh?

and here she be in all her glory - we have named her greenhouse#2 (yes, we know that we are pretty original thinkers!). every single window gotten out of other people's garbage for the last 6yrs!!!!

there's some finessing to be done, to be sure, but it was hot as hades in there this afternoon when he finished it! and it's got a lovely door that our big bro G and our big sis Cgave us!!!

i have been trying to feed the man some good protein/carb/veg/fruit/legume meals every day...he's out there by himself building this monster of a 20 X 8 ft greenhouse!!!! here's some mushroom fried rice cooked in sesame oil with a ton of garlic and a bit of soya.

because he's been working so hard on the greenhouse AND his contract - he needs some heavy food even though summer has just started. here's kymberz "hmmm...what else can i throw into this soup?" soup.

i couldn't begin to tell you what's in that soup. it just starts with 2 pints of homemade bone broth, 1 pint of homemade veg broth, canned tomatoes, pasta, kale, 5 kinds of beans, hamburger and 10 million spices. this soup could knock down an elephant. i made a ton and froze some for jambaloney's lunches at work and some for us to have a quick dinner or supper.

after he's been working a few hours, i make him stop and come in and have a little bit of something cool - like freshmade salsa, guacamole, hummus or chilled soups. like this chilled cantaloupe soup.

i made a kimchi-ish/pickled daikon radish, carrot and bean sprouts kimchi.

we eat these regularly and various other fermented/pickled/probiotic foods. the kimchi above is to go with this:

here's a beautiful rib-cap-off that jambaloney got at half price. it's to make kymberz version of korean bulgogi. after 3 days of sitting in that marinade in the fridge, regularly being rubbed, it will be so tender it will be very difficult to get that thing on the grill. persevere kids - persevere!

here's edgar (aka the rat), sleeping on a shelf on the porch.

right on top of Frankie Blue Eyes (aka monky-manoonch) who is sleeping in the shoe rack.

cats eh? can't live with them, can't live without them! something else we can't live without?

our pollinators!!! because we need pollinators for these!

this is the earliest we have had tomatoe flowers - woohoo! xox

Canadian, Please! Happy 150 Canada Day!

Happy Canada Day! it's not just Canada's birthday today...it's our 150th birthday!

this song that i have embedded kills me everytime i hear it! here is the lyrics first, for friends from other countries that might not be able to make out the accents!

Canadian Please, by Julia Bentley and Gunnarolla:

[Julia)

Yeah, I know that you wanna be Canadian, please
Even if in the winter things tend to freeze
We've got the world Monopoly on trees
And our country's bordered by three different seas

[Gunnarolla]
Yeah I know that you wanna be Canadian, please
We invented the zipper, we've got expertise
We made insulin to combat disease
Yeah I know that you wanna be Canadian, please

[Both]
Brits have got the monarchy
The U.S. has the money
But I know that you wanna be Canadian
The French have got the wine and cheese
Koalas chill with the Aussies
But I know that you wanna be Canadian

[Gunnarolla]
Et si ce n'était pas assez
On a duex langues officielles
L'anglais et le français
Ooh la la

[Julia Bentley]
Yeah, I know that you wanna be Canadian, please
Where else do you find mounted police
Or go to the hospital and not pay fees?
Yeah, I know that you wanna be Canadian, please

[Gunnarolla]
And when freshwater is in high demand
We've got the world's largest supply on hand
So you know that we could make a pretty good friend
But it's even better if you can be

[Both]
Brits have got the monarchy
The U.S. has the money
But I know that you wanna be Canadian
The French have got the wine and cheese
Koalas chill with the Aussies
But I know that you wanna be Canadian

[Julia Bentley]
So you're thinking to yourself
"How do I live in this beautiful country?"
Well, I've got some steps for you to follow

[Both]
Step 1: Lose the gun
Step 2: Buy a canoe
Step 3: Live multiculturally
Step 4: You're ready, there is no more!
We got beavers, caribou, and moose
We got buffalos, bears, and Canadian goose
And we're sorry about Celine Dion
But she did do that good song for James Cameron

[Both]
Brits have got the monarchy
The U.S. has the money
But I know that you wanna be Canadian
The French have got the wine and cheese
Koalas chill with the Aussies
But I know that you wanna be Canadian
The Greeks chilled out with Socrates
Can't build a wall like the Chinese
But I know that you wanna be Canadian
In Kenya they have safaris
We've missed lots of other countries
But I know that you wanna be Canadian

just for fun - watch the video! they are crazy and both very canadian! and funny!

it was nice the other day - today it is grey and rainy!

july 1st is when we know that we need to get the blue cups out - thanks to our friend on the mainland of nova scotia at the eager gridless beaver blog.

you can watch a video of our prime minister eating chips from a chip truck or you can just look at ours!

we had canada day que paso chips...totally organic! with fresh-made salsa!

and stir fries with local veg - we love the mainland as they start producing veg before us and we know the veg is local!

here's Flower 325b, our Scoby's latest creation:

look at all of that fermented fizz! Flower 325b makes us 4 and a half jars of delicious kombucha every 10-11 days - and that's exactly how much we drink - we love the stuff!

fresh-made hummus and more que pasa organic chips.

kids we don't advertise on our blogs but those chips are sooooo delicious!

the maniac has been working on his contract and building a greenhouse at the same time!

this is what he has finished on canada day!

Happy Canada Day to all of our Canadian friends! and here is a great review of the friendship between Canada and the US explained by Tom Brokaw.

sending love to all! xoxo
